Every artist should have a signature sound. Whether its evident in the production, lyrics, or vocality of the artist, the signature should be present. How do you find your signature sound? How do you find your musical niche? Let’s use an example. Artist A woke up this morning and decided that music was their calling. They have so many musical ideas ranging from merging musical styles like Hip-Hop, rock, R&B, and musical theater into one sound. They love the production of Kanye West, old school Dr. Dre, Timbaland, the Neptunes, and Lex Luger. They also happen to be a big fan of the showmanship of artists like Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Michael Jackson, and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Step #1-The artist has to find a producer that understands their musical influences and can work with them in creating a unique sound. Step #2-Once the artist has found a producer to work with, they have to be dedicated to maintaining a consistent studio schedule even if that means they have to pay. Step #3-After diligently working on music, the artist (and producer) should put out an EP displaying the best 5 songs from that artist. Step #4-Track which songs people are responding to most by listening to them using social media analytic tools. Be aware that you may not find a producer right away but don’t be afraid to explore your own production skills using music programs. The songs you come up with on your own may not sound like much but you can use them as base tracks for professional production. Also remember, the more time you spend in the studio, the closer you get to honing in on your signature sound. Never overlook putting together an agreement with the producer you’re working with!
